Our rehearsals
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings - starting with a short warm up at 7.45pm. It's a short physical warm up, then a vocal warm up, and then it's into some singing!
The group is split into 4 sections. Ladies barbershop stole the names from the Men's choruses, so we have (from highest to lowest): Tenor, Lead, Baritone, Bass. Don't worry if you don't know which one would suit you best - we'll help you figure that out.
Tenors: The highest part - normally clear (non vibrato) singers, who are comfortable singing quite high (E' and F') quite a lot of the time!
Leads: The tune! Generally the leads get to sing the tune, though we like to catch them out occasionally.
Baritones: Often the same range as the leads - but rarely get any tune! One of the harder parts to learn - but we couldn't sing the music without them!
Basses: The lowest part. Often goes down to low Ds (even Cs very occasionally). If you often find yourself singing along to songs/hymns an octave down, then this might be the part for you!!
Sometimes the parts will get together outside of rehearsals to have a 'part practice'. Each section has a 'section leader' who will run any part practices, and be your first port of call if you're having any trouble with the music. We're all here to help!
Everyone gets given sheet music - but don't worry if you can't read it - you don't need to be able to! We sing through music in rehearsals by ear, and have music files of our own part to practise along to at home.
